Wearable sales slow as novelty fades • The Register

Laptop computer sales fell 6.9% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2022, according to analyst firm IDC.

While 107.4 million devices still rolled out of the factory, IDC estimates demand has been depressed by inflation, fears of a recession and increased spending in other non-tech categories.

The market may also have peaked after what IDC described as “the hyper growth the wearables market has seen over the past two years.”

A certain pandemic meant that these two years were when much of the punters’ disposable income could not be used for experiences like travel or restaurants, but could be used to acquire shiny gadgets to send home. Or practical work-from-home gadgets like what IDC calls “earwear,” a category that saw shipments increase nearly 30% in 2021 but sales are flat in 2022.

IDC suggests the market was even worse for basic digital wristbands, demand for which fell 20% in 2021, then plunged even deeper in the first half of 2022.

“It’s unfortunate that companies like Apple, Samsung and Google are launching more high-end smartwatches at a time when the appetite for high-priced products remains in question,” said Jitesh Ubrani, director of research for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “And while prices for some new products remain the same as the previous generation, the strength of the US dollar makes it more difficult to purchase in local currencies around the world.”

The analyst firm estimates that wearable device shipments will be flat in 2022 at around 535.5 million units, with growth to return to the smartwatch and hearing aid markets as they reach new buyers. in emerging markets and punters in mature markets replacing dead or obsolete products.

Apple continues to dominate the wearables market, with 25% market share in Q2 2022, representing a 6% quarter-over-quarter decline that can be explained by buyers reasonably expecting launch recent new models in its Watch range.

Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi all have a similar market share.

India’s Imagine Marketing, which offers well-priced wearables branded “boAt”, is the fifth most prolific wearables vendor on the planet. ®
