Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass generated $2.9 billion in revenue in 2021

Although Microsoft has never officially revealed how much money Xbox Game Pass is making, the subscription platform’s 2021 revenue was outlined in a Brazilian government report (via TweakTown).

The Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) recently approved the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. In a CAD document surrounding the purchase, it is revealed that Xbox Game Pass generated US$2.9 billion (about C$3.9 billion) in revenue in 2021.

That said, it’s unclear how much profit the tech giant made from the gaming subscription service. This revenue figure is believed to only include the console version of Game Pass and not its PC counterpart.

The report also estimates that Xbox earned US$16.28 billion (about C$22.3 billion) on hardware, software, and Game Pass subscriptions. This means Game Pass accounts for 18% of Microsoft’s overall Xbox revenue. In total, Xbox Game Pass reached 25 million subscribers last year.

The report also estimates how much other gaming subscription platforms earned, with Nintendo’s Switch Online service earning $932 million (about $1.2 million) (10-20% market share) and EA Play (which is also included with Xbox Game Pass subscriptions) making US$356 million (about C$489 million) in revenue in 2021.

In other Microsoft-related news, Phil Spencer, the head of all things Xbox, might have teased his as-yet-unreleased streaming console, codenamed “Keystone.” With Google’s Stadia game streaming platform gone, it makes sense that Microsoft plans to unveil its dedicated streaming hardware soon.
