Genshin Impact Mobile surpasses $3.7 billion in revenue on its second anniversary

When it comes to open-world RPGs, no game comes close to Genshin Impact in terms of popularity and cultural influence. Developed by a China-based video game publisher and developer, miHoYo, it was released on September 28, 2020 for PC, iOS, Android, and Playstation 4.

Because Genshin Impact’s release coincided with the global pandemic, it became an instant hit. Anime-style characters and voice acting added to its charms. The game also periodically adds new quests and new characters to the story which allows the player to continue playing the game.

Even though Genshin Impact is free to play, it also offers paid content like weapons and characters using gacha mechanics. In the first year alone, the game generated $2 billion.

Now, after 2 years, as reported by Sensor Tower, only the mobile version of the game has done “$3.7 billion in player spendingand the game was considered the “third highest grossing mobile gamesince then, just behind Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, which raised $5.5 billion and $4.9 billion, respectively.

Genshin Impact achieved the highest proportion of revenue from China with “$1.2 billion just on iOS.” Outside China, Genshin Impact was the second highest-grossing game in the world just behind Roblox and ahead of Candy Crush, as indicated by a report from the detection tower,

Outside of China, Genshin Impact ranks #2 in mobile game player spending, racking up $2.5 billion internationally on the App Store and Google Play. It ranks above King’s Candy Crush Saga at #3 with $2.3 billion, and just behind Roblox Corporation’s Roblox at #1 with $2.5 billion.

Japan and the United States are the second and third most profitable countries for Genshin Impact, accounting for 24% and 17% of global revenue, respectively.

In China, the Apple App Store represented “68% of worldwide turnover” while Google Play 32%. The figures are globally more balanced with 48% for Google Play and 52% for App Store.

These numbers speak to the continued success of Genshin Impact. miHoYo also plans to launch the game on Nintendo Switch. Currently, the game is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, and iOS.
